Free Beginner Volley-Fit Sessions: Perth Scorpions do Pride in Sport Fest

Published Wed 05 Feb 2025

The 2025 Pride in Sport Festival is a national initiative aimed at breaking down barriers and increasing participation in sport among LGBTQ+ people. With a focus on engaging non-active LGBTQ+ individuals, the festival provides opportunities for inclusive, fun, and welcoming sporting experiences that promote both physical and mental well-being.

As part of the 2025 Pride in Sport Festival, The Perth Scorpions Volleyball Club will host Free Beginners Volley-Fit Sessions between the 7th of March and 31st of May. This is to foster LGBTQ+ inclusion and create a stronger sense of belonging within the sporting community.

Perth Scorpions President, James Benjamin says he is thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking event.

Our club is about fostering friendship through a shared love of volleyball. The opportunity to provide our weekly beginners sessions for free, through participation in the Pride in Sport Festival, is an amazing opportunity to further build our community. Volleyball is a really accessible sport, as you don’t need any equipment to get started; being able to provide our sessions for free, breaks down one of the only entry barriers. Our inclusive and caring community is the best place to rediscover sport, in a safe and sensitive environment.”

Pride in Sport National Program Manager Beau Newell highlighted the importance of the festival:

The Pride in Sport Festival is about breaking barriers and creating opportunities. It’s no secret that LGBTQ+ people face higher rates of exclusion from sport, often due to fear of discrimination, lack of representation, or simply not feeling welcome. This initiative offers LGBTQ+ individuals a chance to connect, participate, and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.”

Research from the Pride in Sport Index (PSI) National Survey shows that LGBTQ+ people are less likely to participate in sport due to fear of discrimination, past negative experiences, or the perception that sport isn’t a space for them. Initiatives like this help us change that narrative.”

By partnering with organisations like Perth Scorpions Volleyball Club, we can foster inclusive sporting environments and ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy the benefits of sport – including those with diverse sexuality or gender identity.”

Since 2020, The Perth Scorpions have been actively promoting inclusivity in Western Australia, and this initiative marks a major milestone in their commitment to diversity.

Perth Scorpions President James on what to expect:

Our experienced coaches – many from the LGBTQIA+ community – will impart essential volleyball skills in a positive space, where you can learn without judgment. This is the perfect opportunity to learn new skills, get fit, and make new connections in our diverse and inclusive community.”

These free (Adult drop-in sessions are available between the 7th of March and 31st of May. Bring a friend, water bottle, and clothes you feel comfortable exercising in. Come as little or as much as you like, have fun, and learn something new!"
